About Nail Fungus Cure

What is Nail Fungus?

Nail fungus is a common condition that can affect both toenails and fingernails. It is caused by a fungus, a living organism that thrives in dark and damp environments, such as beneath and around toenails. Toes are particularly susceptible due to the moist environment created by shoes and socks.

Affected nails may show signs such as yellowish or brownish discoloration, thickening, brittleness over time, and/or crumbling edges. In severe cases, nails may even detach.

Nail fungus can be embarrassing and sometimes painful. The nail provides a protective cover that allows the fungus to grow underneath, leading to the accumulation of debris under the free edge of the nail.

Who is Affected by Nail Fungus?

Nail fungus can affect anyone, though certain factors can increase susceptibility and the severity of symptoms.

Factors contributing to the condition include:

  • Shared use of infected implements or environments
  • Unhygienic nail care practices
  • Abnormal pH levels of the skin
  • Trauma to the nail
  • Poor foot hygiene
  • Reduced immunity

It is estimated that 1 in 10 Australians have toenail fungus,

making it one of the most common conditions

treated by podiatrists and foot specialists.

Where Does Nail Fungus Come From?

Nail fungus, along with other fungi like athlete’s foot, thrives in warm, moist environments. Common places where these fungi can be found include unsanitary pedicure salons, spas, public swimming pools, locker rooms, and showers. Fungi can reside in warm puddles on tile floors and inside foot baths, such as whirlpools, where they wait for someone to come into contact with their spores.

What Does Nail Fungus Look Like?

In its early stages, nail fungus appears as a cloudy or yellowish tint under the nail. As the infection progresses, it can spread to the surrounding skin and nails. Without treatment, the nail can become severely damaged, potentially breaking or falling off. The affected nail may thicken, become powdery, and be prone to further breakage. Left untreated, nail fungus can spread to other nails, causing them to become dry, chalky, and thick.

Common signs and symptoms of nail fungus include:

  • Flaky or brittle nails
  • Regular nail chipping
  • Discoloration (yellow, brown, or black spots)
  • Thickened nails that are white and painful when wearing shoes
  • Foul odour emanating from under the nails
  • Pain or discomfort under the nail while walking
